Blog #5 Third Journal Entry

Not much progress on physically making the books, I started gathering stuff for my book but haven't put it together yet. I definitely need to have more content for me to make an entire book. I started experimenting on creating different paper, but wasn't successful. For example, I tried dipping sketching paper in a "rose-water" which I took petals from the roses I had gotten from my boyfriend and saturated the water with the dried roses. It had a dark brownish color with the smell of roses. I think I left the paper in there for too long because it got moldy and the paper started to rip. Another thing I tried was using a coffee filter as a page. When I brewed the coffee I saved the filter and rinsed off the beans but that took off most of the color so I redipped it into a pot of coffee again and let that dry.
Since coffee is a big part of my life now I want to make a drawing with coffee and experiment with different levels of creamer to see how it would turn out. I understand that insects and animals might try to eat the paper but I'm willing to see how it turns out. Plus my room can smell like coffee forever if I make a painting out of coffee. I want to make one of my books entirely out of coffee and use every aspect of coffee into the book as well like the whole bean, packaging, ground version, and liquid version as well.
Another book would be include all sorts of arts and crafts, sewing, and such. Crafting is a huge hobby of mine so I want a fun crafty book. It would show the art of book-crafting and the viewer would see how the book was put together. The spine would be exposed so you can see the sewn pages and the cover wouldn't be totally covered up and look so finished. Hopefully it won't look as though it wasn't finish but look intentional.
I also want to include drawings and paintings of things I like. Even though I use computers a lot I still put my heart into it. When I was younger I used to draw a lot so I want to go back to drawing but still have a solid "design" element. Painting was a new thing when I came to college. I never really painted until recently so I want to include that too. Maybe have a timeline of different mediums I learned throughout my life?
I'm making a lot of mini books but not all of them will be put on display.
