Blog #3: Welcome Back Gallery Critque

During this exhibition, we walked around the gallery and was told to find something that's totally awesome and some that is not. I've been at the gallery before to look at the videos and have a separate critique for my video seminar class. Aside from the videos, there were two works that stood out to me, both in the back room on the left. The piece that I was drawn to was by Dikko Faust and his Purgatory Pie Press. This Print Press drew my eye to it because it was the only book in the gallery. I'm really interested in books and there's not too many "graphic design" pieces so this one really got me interested to pick it up and unfold the pages. I liked how the cover tells the spectator to make a box out of the piece, because when you flip through the pages it isn't any just ordinary book. You can unfold it and look at the back which give you information about the piece. As a graphic designer I can really appreciate the craftsmanship and the printing process. The other artwork in the same room was this "space craft-like" sculpture. It didn't really go with the room and I felt like it was literally thrown in the room. Part of the piece was broken- or at least it looks unintentional. But it has a foil wrapped around it and sticks pointing out of it and the computer screen is showing something 3D mapping of something abstract so I'm not sure how this relates to the piece in general. Maybe everything in the room was random but that piece just seems like it doesn't work with anything. There was a plug that came from the sculpture but I don't think it worked? Maybe that was why one of the pole was broken? I don't know. Overall I think that piece shouldn't have been in the gallery.

Good feed back! I'm glad you were able to find pieces you liked and didn't like.
